Arizona Myeloma Network (AzMN) is proud to present the 1st Annual Ft. Defiance Cancer Awareness and Advocacy Conference, on Saturday, October 11th, 2008 at the Navajo Museum, Window Rock, Arizona.

The AzMN/Ft. Defiance program is a collaboration of many groups and individuals from the Ft. Defiance Hospital and the Navajo community seeking to improve and expand their cancer services. We are bringing together leading cancer specialists and scientists, educators, and cancer patient advocates to birng new ideas and resources to Ft. Defiance.

Mechelle Morgan Flowers, RN, with the Indian Health Services, Utilization Review/Discharge Planner, Ft Defiance Hospital, attended the Living with Myeloma Conference and invited Barbara Kavanagh to assist Ft. Defiance staff and patients develop their own Cancer Conference. Barbara has been assisted by an Executive Committee, including; Fred Hubbard, Advisory Council on Indian Health Care (ACOIHC), and Bodour Salhia, PhD, cancer researcher at Translational Genomics (TGen), and Jack Kavanagh, myeloma patient and Co-founder, AzMN.

The picture above was taken at our first AzMN/Ft. Defiance planning meeting, on Friday, July 18th, attended by representatives of the hospital staff, outreach coordinators, Women's Health programs, Gallup Indian Medical Center, Dine College students and faculty, Public Health nursing, New Mexico Tumor Registry, and tribal leaders. Mechelle is chairing the newly formed Ft. Defiance committee and working closely with the Phoenix 'team', which includes staff from Arizona Cancer Control, InterTribal Council of Arizona, St.Joseph's Cancer Center, Leukemia Lymphoma Society, Dr.John Molina, Medical Director of AHCCCS, and other leaders in the cancer and research field.

We are currently seeking sponsors and grants for this innovative 'grassroots' cancer awareness and education program but are committed to helping the Ft. Defiance Navajo community have better access to cancer services and new treatments. Click here for the sponsorship agreement.
