7th Annual Arizona Myeloma Network Golf Classic
McCormick Ranch Golf Club
October 22, 2011
A note from the President:
Special 'thanks' to the United Associaton of
Plumbers, Pipefitters, Steamfitters and Service Techs, UA, who join us
for the third year as our Tournament Sponsor. Bill and Pat Hite, and
the members and associates of the UA, have become such an important
part of our lives and of the work we do for myeloma patients and
families in Arizona. Without the help of all of our sponsors, local
businesses, our Board, volunteers, and Staff, we would not be able to
continue to 'grow' and 'expand' our free awareness and educational
programs.
This year was especially challenging when
Jack, my husband and 20 year myeloma survivor, went through open heart
surgery in February. He has shown his usual courage and determination
and was at our 5th Annual Living with Myeloma Conference
just five weeks later.
We had a great conference, almost doubling
our attendance, and again featuring top myeloma specialists,
researchers, and other dedicated healthcare professionals to provide
the latest information on new treatments, insurance, financial aid,
and healthy lifestyle programs.
Our 3rd Race for Hope for All
Cancers, May 1st, was led by Audrey Zavodsky, a successful Race car
driver, nurse, and health educator for Ford Motor Company. This year's
Race was both a tribute to cancer survivors, and also to others who
have lost their battle. We 'Celebrated' the courage and humor of Nick
Gulli, a myeloma patient, friend, and volunteer. He died just 10 days
before the Race. Over 30 friends and family 'teamed' up to walk and
run in his honor.
In June, we held our 4th AzMN/John Wayne
Navajo Cancer Awareness and Advocacy Conference on the Navajo
Reservation and brought together an outstanding collaboration of
speakers and organizations, as well as local Navajo cancer groups, and
traditional healers. Each year, the numbers of participants and
resources 'grow'. Shakira Begay, an 11 year old leukemia patient, who
came to our conference last year in a wheel chair, received treatment
and financial assistance as a result of our efforts, and is now in
remission. Shakira is back in school and at our conference, sang the
National Anthem, in Navajo to a standing ovation!
Thanks to all of you, we will be able to
continue our important work, bringing information on the latest cancer
research, new treatments, and new resources to myeloma patients and
their loving families and caregivers'.
Thank you' again to all of our golfers,
sponsors, celebrities, volunteers, and friends who support us and give
us the strength to keep working and 'dreaming' of a world without
cancer.
Sincerely,

Barbara Kavanagh, Founder and President
